Edward Purdy Ney was born in Minneapolis in 1920. He earned his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1942. During his graduate studies he worked with the Naval Research Laboratory in analysis of uranium isotopes for the Manhattan Project. After earning his Ph. Phyllis St. Cyr Freier first came to the University of Minnesota with her husband, George Freier, following World War II.
